Hefty Records Flossed Out Mix

A 2006 mix from The Glitch Mob’s edIT, showcasing beats from Hefty Records’ discography and the best of mid-aughts rap.

Coming out of Chicago, John HughesHefty Records served as a home for for artists like Elliot Lipp, and Telefon Tel Aviv, and at least one Prefuse 73 side project, as well as providing a home for some overlooked artists of the time such as Some Water and Sun and Retina.it

A number of the artists featured here including the DJ have moved on to understandably different aesthetics in the 8 years since this has been released but, like any good mix it is not only technically interesting but serves as a snapshot of the time which is was made.

edIT, now of Glitch Mob fame, shares remixes of mid-aught era rap on top of a handful of beats from the Hefty Records collection. Years later and I still have a soft-spot for this one.

Trevino – 3 and 1 EP (3024-022)

Rather than bore with you my affinity for adjectives, and fill up this website’s beautiful negative space with my rambling, I prefer to let the music speak for itself and encourage you to listen to the stream below, courtesy of the 3024 Soundcloud

After a brief respite from talking about music as regularly as in the past, a combo-breaker here as we take a look at 3024‘s latest effort. Marcus Intalex adds to the impressive list of releases under his Trevino project with this 3 track selection for Martyn‘s label. A safe assumption that the title of the release points to the 3 regular tracks +1 exclusive for digital purchasers of the release, Trevino showing real growth in the realm of acid influenced house since dabbling with the idea on earlier Revolv:r releases such as Debbit. (still a personal favorite of mine)

Like it? Me too, you should download 3 and 1 EP on iTunes / Surus if you’d rather pick up the FLAC downloads or the vinyl copy.

Emptyset – Material (SUB007)

Emptyset – Material 12″ released on Subtext, reviewed with previews, download, and purchase information

Awesome stuff on the vein of ambient/drone/post-dub, whatever adjective we are using for really sparse techno records this week coming from Emptyset, the duo of Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg (Ginz).

Expounding on 2012’s Medium, Material is a collection of sparse Loefah-esque growls captured as the duo bombarded cavernous locations with immense soundsystems and recorded the ensuing reflections.
