RA.336 – Dusk + Blackdown

RA.336 - Dusk + BlackdownFollowing a regrettable article form Resident Advisor last week, redemption appears quickly in the form of this week’s podcast selection from lengendary grime gospel figureheads Dusk + Blackdown. Two artists I have been fortunate enough to meet in a post mentioned earlier, as well as coverage of releases from their Keysound label from Damu, and LHF, members of whom we are humbled to follow on our bi-weekly Sub.FM show, The minds behind the Keysound label, renowned for their label in addition to Martin “Blackdown” Clark’s longtime contributer to Pitchfork’s grime music guide from the during the rise.

Two ace individuals here who I have been fortunate enough to encounter between our various travels, presenting a one hour selection of tunes curated for the Resident Advisor Podcast series.

RA.Exchage 114 – Scuba

Resident Advisor sits down with HotFlush honcho Paul Rose (Scuba/SCB) for their latest installment of their Exchange series.

Exchange, focuses on the words of artists profiled on Resident Advisor, putting the music on the back-burner momentarily. With a reputation as one of the more diverse, and well-spoken electronic music stalwarts, this promises to be an interesting listen at the very least.

Wheez-ie – Hot Mom USA Podcast (MILFCAST003)

Wheez-ie (Matt Mauldin) contributes this mix for DJ Shiftee / Hot Mom USA’s MILFCAST podcast series for July

Wheez-ie - MILFCAST003A new one from our friend Wheez-ie recently put together this new mix for DJ Shiftee‘s Hot Mom USA.

No doubt Wheez-ie is as talented a DJ as he is a producer, his inclusion on the podcast held by a two-time world DMC champ should probably not leave it open to further debate.

SCB Podcast for CLR

Paul Rose revisits his SCB moniker for this week’s Chris Liebing’s curated CLR podcast series.

SCB - CLR Podcast #168Paul Rose revisits his SCB moniker for this week’s Chris Liebing’s curated CLR podcast series.

Originally the SCB project was conceived as an antidote to the characteristic broken beats of the Scuba sound, as was shown on the first SCB release, a remix of Scuba’s own Hard Boiled taken from the album A Mutual Antipathy in 2008.[*]

Get To Know: Archie Pelago

A comprehensive look at Brooklyn-based jazz trio Archie Pelago, highlighting currently available releases, interviews, and freely downloadable or streaming videos and mixes

Archie PelagoTo get you ready for the Archie Pelago mix on Mary Anne Hobbs’ XFM broadcast Saturday April 7, let’s make sure you know what’s good.

Archie Pelago, a three-man outfit from Brooklyn, combines classically influenced cello, saxophone, and trumpet with contemporary music and modern technology for a sound that reaches beyond other electronic / instrumental collaborations in recent memory.

Lately, too many performers treat Ableton Live as DJ software, not leveraging the software’s potential to reshape music during  performance, a realization not lost on Archie Pelago.

Spotlight On: Skriptah

Now for a post I’ve wanted to do for a while but unfortunately have been a bit busy lately. For our last podcast / artist feature of 2011 we have tapped San Francisco’s ‘Skriptah.’

SkriptahNow for a post I’ve wanted to do for a while but unfortunately have been a bit busy lately. For our last podcast / artist feature of 2011 we have tapped San Francisco’s ‘Skriptah.’

Skriptah’s sound keys on deep, so-called ‘eyes-down’ or the particularly loathsome term ‘dungeon.’ Perhaps resulting from his oft-cited hearing loss, his productions and selections call for the tracks you feel before you hear.

Skriptah has provided a mix for us, available for streaming or download via Soundcloud below. For the full track-list of the mix and the short Q&A we got with him check beneath the fold

Shortstack Mix for Seclusiasis

Shortstack (icnt.mx / Embassy Recordings) mix for Seclusiasis’ Who Run It podcast, showcasing house and techno selections from the Atlanta selector / editor

The crew at Seclusiasis recently asked me to contribute a short mix for their Who Run It podcast series. I put together around 30 minutes of deeper house and techno stuff I have been feeling. This one was recorded the night of the height of the London rioting a few weeks hence the deep selection ending the mix. Thanks to Seclusiasis for letting me put this together and getting it out.

My section comes in around 1:02:00 if you wonder how it breaks down. Please download and share!

Commodo Sonic Router Mix #100

As referenced earlier, I put together some words on Deep Medi / Blackbox producer ‘Commodo‘ for a feature article in Sonic Router. Alongside the words comes a 40 minute or so mix from Commodo featuring some original productions, and dubplates from Distance and Pinch to name a few.

Dom Tarasek is a Sheffield based producer whose tracks were first brought to my attention about a year ago when his single ‘Eastern Bloc’ premiered on Joe Nice’s Gourmet Beats radio show. With a nod from Joe Nice, releases on Black Box and with forthcoming material coming in the next couple of weeks on Mala’s Deep Medi  imprint, it seems assured Commodo’s is at the helm of a prolific future in the weightier side of the dubstep arena.[*]
