Jack Sparrow Speaks

Jack Sparrow (Author / R. Wild) shares some valuable insights with GetDarker in this recent interview

Some good words from Jack Sparrow / R Wild / 1/2 of Author, one of my favorite producers. One of the more well-spoken, and friendlier artists I’ve interacted with as a result of working on this site. Also, he comes correct with the book recommendations so much respect for him in that regard too.

It’s a therapy for me. It literally is therapy. If I didn’t do music there are parts of me that I couldn’t get out; in conversation, emotionally. It’s not a case of “I’m gonna do this tune and this promo and rah rah rah.” I write tunes because I need to.

Excellent anecdotes and observations on the early dubstep scene, his emergence as an artist, and ironically some allusions to the topics brought up in the musical ability vs neighborhoods of UK post from yesterday.

Author (Jack Sparrow / Ruckspin) Review

A bit of a different sound than expected from these two; the self-titled full length from Author brings smooth late-night vibe to contrast the usually upbeat and energetic productions from Sparrow and Ruckspin. Replete with soulful brass parts reminiscent of Good Looking Records’ Cookin’ imprint.

It is no secret that we are big fans of Jack Sparrow here at icnt.mx, having been blown away by the artist’s full length on Tectonic as well as his near endless list of remixes and singles that keep popping up. His latest sees Sparrow teaming up with a familiar collaborator of his in Ruckspin for another full length for Tectonic under the production moniker ‘Author.’

No attention to details spared here; the two producer’s alternate lives crafting sound-system focused tunes is not lost here. With strong focus paid to the soundscapes each track paints, the tracks are undeniably deep however, hardly any would seem out of place in the mellower hours of the dancehall.

V/A – Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space (Reviewed)

I know I am not the only one who was drawn to dubstep by spending formative years of my youth listening to reggae albums, especially dub. Honestly, Scientist has always been a personal favorite; no disrespect to King Tubby for being the originator and no disrespect to Mad Professor for embracing new technologies in an old sound however Scientist seemed to always sit perfectly in the middle of the proto, and the present.

“This project has taken over a year to put together from its conception late last summer. The final results are worth every minute of effort that’s gone into this – this is definitely my proudest moment for Tectonic to date. The influence of dub swings round full circle!” –Pinch

His “Vampires” and “World Cup” releases having left the biggest impression on me, even still today. Obviously, I’m absolutely enthralled that this release exists and even more having an opportunity to listen to these tracks and relay some early impressions on them back to readers.

Attempting my hardest to stay away from clichéd idioms when writing this review, it is difficult to approach speaking about specific tracks on this release without emphasizing “the sum is greater than the parts.” Honestly, this is something that I hope listeners appreciate start-to-finish as much as selectors and dancers will appreciate hearing singles played in DJ sets, or even more excitingly the upcoming UK tour with Scientist to support the album’s release.

Subreachers Guest Mix on FOB Show

Very excited to see that good friends Subreachers is starting to get some well deserved attention. This Belgian based duo first caught my attention with their release ‘Octave‘ on Haunted Audio earlier this year. Since then their productions have definitely stepped up and gotten much more deeper and defined, even attracting remixes from Jack Sparrow and Lurka among others. With a sound pallete that stretches everything from traditional dubstep, to house, to guitar and piano jazz, these two constantly redefine my expectations for their releases with each new track I hear from them

This week, Subreachers was featured on the weekly FOB Show hosted by BunZero on Sub.FM, with excellent releases and hosting from BunZero as always, and an exciting mix of originals, choice cuts, and unreleased cuts from J:Kenzo, Jack Sparrow and others, this is definitely worth the download.

Jack Sparrow – Circadian (TECCD009)

Yesterday, the much awaited full length release  from Leeds based producer Jack Sparrow, on the always high-quality Tectonic label. As true with most Tectonic releases, On ‘Circadian,’ Sparrow delivers a sharp and deep full length, with one foot heavily planted in classic dubstep vibes, and sound-design that is a clear nod to influences from techno and minimal production elements.

The release starts off with ‘Loveless,’ a smooth tune that is a clear indication from the beginning that ‘Circadian’ intends to be much more than a run-off-the-mill dubstep full length release, with an aesthetic that reminds me of early Ramadanman releases such as ‘The Woon.’ Continuing, the release features a VIP remix of his previous release ‘The Chase’ and an exciting and deep collaboration with Ruckspin, the tempo speeds up and the mood approaches autonomic as you hear the syncopated rhythms of tracks like ‘Relapse’

Many many highlights on this exciting and well deserved full length release from Sparrow on Pinch’s Tectonic label, a full length that is equally well served on the headphones as it is in the club. Although releases from Jack Sparrow do seem few-and-far-between at times the sheer volume of keepers on this release and growth in the depth of sound has made this release worth the wait.

Circadian is available for purchase as of this week, and Fact Magazine is currently running a week long free preview of the release via Soundcloud for those looking to stream the tunes in their entirety.

Be sure to check out this remix of good friends’ of mine Subreachers that Jack Sparrow and they recently posted online, deep vibes from both of them each and every.

Tectonic Readies full length Jack Sparrow

After a brief respite following the releases of his Terminal / Tormented 12″ on Pinch’s Tectonic label earlier this year, October 4th has been marked as the release date for the Leeds’ bass music experimenter. The release “Circadian Rhythms” is marked by a large number of unreleased tracks as well as a VIP reworking of The Chase, and collaborations with Ruckspin and Indi Kaur who’s vocals left a lasting impression on many following her appearance on Pinch’s Angels in the Rain

If you are unfamiliar be sure to check out the mix he prepared as a part of the Fact Magazine Series available for streaming via MixCloud, complete tracklist is available beneath the fold. Continue reading “Tectonic Readies full length Jack Sparrow”

SD Dubstep Podcast 9.0 [SNF]

Download the SD Dubstep Podcast from San Francisco DJ “SNF”

The SD Dubstep crew has recently put up a new mix in their podcast series featuring fellow dubstepped.net blogger SNF, showcasing his unique perspective on dubstep and modern bass music.

The write up features a pretty interesting interview with SNF, featuring a juxtaposition between discussing brostep and the apocalypse (no mistake I’m assuming), as well as the mix which is a part of their regular podcast series. Some great selections old and new on the mix and obviously if it’s posted here it’s highly recommended. Enjoy!
