Mala – Calle F / Cuba Electronica

The official video for Mala’s “Cuba Electronica” as well as a preview of “Calle F” off the Mala In Cuba album

Mala_cigRipped from a recent Gilles Peterson broadcast, Mala offers up this preview of ‘Calle F‘ one of the forthcoming selections from the DMZ and Deep Medi founder’s album of Cuban inspired rhythms. The project stems from the Gilles Peterson helmed wing of the Havana Cultura project, aimed at exposing Cuban influence on the global stage

I have to admit, I am a bigger fan of the single Cuba Electronica that has seen airplay on Joe Nice’s radio show featured below, but it’s exciting to catch the dramatic shifts in Mala’s music

Rustie is the production alias of Glasgow-based Russel Whyte, who’s sound embraces the sharpness of southern rap. Very exciting to hear production like Wiz Khalifa and productions like Rustie’s as a contrast to recent Essential Mix selections.

Keep your ears peeled for sounds from Baauer as well as the highly acclaimed Regis Chillbin single from EPROM, on the Rwina Records label

Pinch / Scientist Feature on Gilles Peterson

In support of the highly anticipated Tectonic compilation featuring remixes from dub reggae pioneer Scientist, the two appeared on BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson show a few weeks ago. In support not only the album’s release and the live shows celebrating the release, the two sat in for a short set.

This might be your best chance to experience these tunes before the albums impending release next week on 6-Dec, some deep reggae cuts from the legendary Scientist are mixed in as well. Definitely worth picking this one up for a the listen.

Roska : The Essential Mix

By now Roska(RoskaRoskaRoskaRoska) needs no introduction, and the Atlanta followers of this blog know first-hand the excellent DJ abilities possessed by UK Funky’s defacto godfather.

As with any artist to grace the Essential Mix airwaves, Pete Tong and company always seem to catch them at the top of their game, at a moment where their style is definitive of their genre. This mix is no different; I first heard glimpses of it driving home from King Plow after our show Friday night. Even after leaving a 900-person show at a club packed to the brim, hearing electronic music all night this sounded absolutely refreshing and I remember making a point to go back and listen to it as quickly as possible. Hopefully you have had a chance to hear this at least once yourself, if not, now is your chance.

BBC iPlayer bound for iOS

BBC iPlayerAs reported on MacDailyNews and the FinancialTimes today, the BBC is planning on releasing its popular iPlayer as a standalone / subscription-based app for the iOS operating system that powers Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices.

Between Benji B, The Essential Mix, and Tim Westwood (purely for comedic value) the ability to backtrack old shows at will on these devices will surely be something I will look forward to being able to experience on my iPhone; the dread of having to wait to go home and stream from my desktop is sometimes not worth the wait. While I do not watch as much BBC television programming as I probably should it will be nice to at least have the option to catch up on some of what the myriad British folks I follow on Twitter are talking about, with the exception of X-Factor, sorry guys – unless it’s Star Search, it’s not a talent show I’m interested in watching.

A Pair of Ramadanman Mixes

As we quickly approach the end of 2010, much discussion will likely be given toward the “best of” the year. It is safe to assume that most readers of this site would put at least one product of the massively prolific Ramandanman  on any conceivable ‘Top 10’ list.

This morning we are graced with two excellent mixes from the Hessle Audio co-founder, first in the form of his appearance on BBC Radio 1‘s appearance and interview on Benji B’s radio show. The second mix, posted on Ramadanman’s Twitter early this morning is an RBMA hosted stream of Ben UFO b2b Ramadanman at Fabric.

Tracklisting for the Benji B set available beneath the fold.

P Money – Ho Riddim

This one is pretty insane. Can’t wait for the release of this in just over two weeks. I heard this on BBC Radio 1 the other evening courtesy of Mistajam while driving home from dinner. I was so astounded by the sounds I immediately hit up the GrimeSpree crew to ask what the hell I was listening to. I’ve been wanting to work more grime into my 140-bpm based sets lately, if more tunes like this are available, it’s going to happen sooner rather than later. Big ups to DJ Swerve on the buttons here, check it out for yourself:

Shackleton feature on BBC Radio1

I don’t keep it much of a secret how much I enjoy the sheer sonic onslaught that is Shackleton’s music. For better or worse, here is a man nearly as nebulous as the music he is known for; becoming one of the more elusive faces in modern bass music releasing a handful of remixes, over the past year on top of a handful of dates in Europe and North America alike. It feels safe to say that Shackleton has not been idle however.

Fortunately for all of us feeling neglected from hearing out what the Bristol native has been up to recently, Mary Anne Hobbs is featuring an extended “farewell mix” to honor the last of her shows at the helm of the BBC Radio1’s Experimental Show (Née Breezeblock.) Be sure to tune in this afternoon/evening depending on your location as Radio1 will have the show in it’s entirety streaming live from their site 26-Aug 0200-0400 GMT (that’s 9PM-11PM ET for the US crew.) Additionally Sirius/XM subscribers can tune in to the time-shifted rebroadcast available in the US.

Update: This show is available for download in full online, highly recommended.
